Our History

Paterson PBA Local 1 proudly represents the dedicated men and women of the Paterson Police Department who serve and protect the City of Paterson. As one of New Jersey’s longest-standing police labor organizations, PBA Local 1 has built a legacy rooted in integrity, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to those who wear the badge.

For generations, PBA Local 1 has served as the collective bargaining representative for Paterson’s rank-and-file police officers, advocating for fair wages, safe working conditions, quality benefits, and the rights of its members. Through negotiations, arbitration, and legal advocacy, PBA Local 1 has helped shape important labor protections for police officers throughout New Jersey. One of its most significant legal victories came in 1981, when a New Jersey Supreme Court decision involving Paterson Police PBA Local 1 established an important precedent regarding collective bargaining and promotional procedures for public employees. While protecting the interests of its members remains a primary mission, PBA Local 1 has always believed that service extends beyond the uniform. The organization has a proud tradition of giving back to the community through charitable initiatives, youth programs, holiday events, scholarship opportunities, fundraising campaigns, and partnerships with local organizations. Whether supporting Special Olympics New Jersey, participating in the Police Unity Tour, assisting families in need, or honoring the memory of fallen officers, PBA Local 1 remains committed to strengthening the bond between law enforcement and the community it serves.
